History

Linseed is an annual herbaceous plant that grows no taller than 60 cm with beautiful blue flowers in the spring, while its fruit is a small capsule containing tiny and brownish-colored seeds.

The linseed plant is known above all because of the fine fabrics that are made from it, but as far back as the Greeks people have also known about the healing powers of its seeds.

The linseed plant grows in temperate climates and was already being cultivated 6,000 years ago on the shores of the Mediterranean, from where it extended to Northern Europe in pre-Roman times.

Preparation tips

There are several ways to use linseeds, for example:

  • ground, they can be added to yogurt for breakfast in the morning
  • as an infusion, after leaving the linseeds to soak in water overnight

added to dough for homemade bread or cakes to enrich their flavor and nutritional value.

Nutritional value

Linseeds contain many substances of high nutritional value that, within a balanced diet, help to purify and maintain well-being in our body.

Vitamin F is particularly important for combating aging processes and for its anti-inflammatory properties.

The fatty acids (oils) contained in linseeds help to keep cholesterol levels in the blood regulated.

Omega-3 fatty acids from plant sources are extremely useful for different functions of our body, especially for those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet or for anybody who does not eat fish at least twice a week, as our body is not able to produce these substances by itself.

The mucilage released from the linseeds left to soak or infuse is an excellent regulator of the intestine in the event of constipation or irritable bowel syndrome and has a detoxifying, soothing and refreshing effect on intestinal flora. Linseeds act rather like scavengers in our body.

Linseeds are also a natural laxative that is particularly useful during pregnancy and can be used regularly for long periods of time without causing addiction.

Linseeds also play an important role in the natural stimulation of the immune system, thus contributing to the prevention of food intolerances.
